What the song is about

“Idol” (アイドル, 2023) is the opening of the anime Oshi no Ko. It's about Ai, the perfect pop idol: she smiles, she sparkles, she tells every fan she loves them — and those words are a lie, because she's never learned how to love. Maybe, the song suggests, the lie is the most sincere love she can give.

It became the first Japanese-language song to top Billboard's Global Excl. US chart, and a phenomenon across Asia.

It's B2 for its speed, which even Japanese listeners struggle with. Start with the fan vocabulary — 推し (your favourite idol), 嘘 (lie), 完璧 (perfect) — which is everyday slang in Japan's idol culture.
