What the song is about

“Volver, Volver” (to return, to return), written by Fernando Z. Maldonado and recorded by Vicente Fernández in 1972, is the great sing-along of Mexican ranchera. A proud man admits he was wrong to leave; he's sorry, and all he wants is to go back to her arms. The chorus repeats “volver” until the whole room is shouting it.

Vicente Fernández, “Chente”, was the king of ranchera for half a century, singing with a full mariachi band in his charro suit. At Mexican parties, this song is often the moment everyone stands up.

Ranchera is sung slowly and dramatically, which makes it ideal for listening practice. The key verb is volver — to come back, to go back — and “otra vez” (again).
