What the song is about

“Querida” (darling) is one of the best-loved songs of Juan Gabriel, the singer-songwriter from Michoacán known simply as El Divo de Juárez. Alone and miserable, he begs the woman he loves to come back: tell me when you'll return, I can't stand it, I need you.

Released in 1984, it spent months at number one in Mexico and has been sung at every party and karaoke since. Juan Gabriel wrote more than a thousand songs, and this is the one everyone knows the chorus to.

The language is everyday and direct — questions, pleas, “por favor” — and the chorus repeats the same few words, so it's an easy song to sing in your first months of Spanish.
