What the song is about

“Qué Agonía” (what agony) is a 2022 mariachi ballad by Yuridia and Ángela Aguilar, two of Mexico's most powerful voices. They sing about the torment of a love that's slipping away — waiting, hoping, and knowing the other person has moved on.

Ángela Aguilar comes from a famous family of ranchera singers (her father is Pepe Aguilar), and Yuridia rose to fame on a TV talent show; together they gave mariachi a new generation of fans, and the song became a long-running hit in Mexico and the US.

Mariachi is wonderful for learners: the words are sung slowly and fully, with long open vowels. Listen for the dramatic vocabulary of ranchera songs — agony, to die of love, to forget, to cry.
