Selena Quintanilla, the Queen of Tejano music from Texas, recorded “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom” on her 1994 album Amor Prohibido. The idea is sweet and simple: whenever she sees the boy she likes, or he walks by, or he dances with someone else, her heart goes bidi bidi bom bom.
The music blends cumbia and reggae with Tejano, the Mexican-American music of Texas. Selena was murdered in 1995 at just 23, and her songs became beloved classics; this one is a favourite at parties and karaoke.
The Spanish is simple and clear — the heart, to see, to pass by, to dance — and the refrain is pure sound. It's a good reminder that Selena, who grew up speaking mostly English, learned to sing in Spanish, just like many of you.
