What the song is about

“Hasta la Raíz” (down to the root) is Natalia Lafourcade's song about a love that ended but never left. Time passes and distance grows, yet the person stays in her the way a root stays in the ground: deep, quiet, part of who she is. It won Record and Song of the Year at the 2015 Latin Grammys.

The images are natural ones — roots, seeds, the earth, a path, the sky — and they are sung slowly and clearly, with careful Mexican pronunciation. It's poetry, but poetry made of common words, which is what makes it a good step up from simple pop.

Listen for “hasta” (until, as far as), one of the most useful little words in Spanish, and for the way Natalia lingers on the last syllables, which gives you time to hear each word.
