“Ella Baila Sola” (she dances alone, 2023) is a corrido tumbado by Eslabon Armado and Peso Pluma. Two friends at a party notice the same woman dancing on her own; one of them gets up the nerve to approach her, and the song follows his nervous, hopeful pick-up — and the friend who's left watching.
It became the first Mexican regional song to reach the top of the global Spotify chart, and helped make Peso Pluma the face of a new wave of música mexicana. The sound is acoustic: requinto guitar, bass, and voices that sound almost spoken.
The vocabulary is Mexican and conversational — compa, morra, the way young people in the north of Mexico talk. Good for hearing how corridos tell a story in short, plain scenes.
