What the song is about

“Plastic Love” (1984) follows a woman who spends every night dancing in Tokyo's clubs. She's been badly hurt before, so now she keeps love light and disposable — “plastic” — never letting anyone close enough to hurt her again, even though she's lonely.

Mariya Takeuchi released it on her album Variety, and it was a modest success at the time. Then, in the late 2010s, a fan upload on YouTube went viral around the world, and the song became the face of the global city-pop revival; an official video finally followed in 2021.

The tempo is relaxed and her voice is clear. The vocabulary — love, night, to dance, wound, city — is ideal for B1, and the song is a window into 1980s Tokyo.
