“Azzurro” (sky blue) was written by Paolo Conte and Vito Pallavicini and made famous by Adriano Celentano in 1968. It's a summer afternoon in the city: it's too blue, too long, the person he loves has gone away on holiday, and he wanders around looking for summer all year long — and wishing the train of his desires would go the other way.
It became one of the most loved Italian songs ever, and because the national football team is called “gli Azzurri”, fans sing it in stadiums.
Celentano sings slowly with a lazy, ironic charm. The vocabulary is everyday — the afternoon, summer, to look for, the train — and “azzurro” is a colour word with a whole country behind it.
