What the song is about

“La Flaca” (the skinny one) was the song that launched Jarabe de Palo in 1996. Pau Donés sings of a woman he fell for — slim, dark-eyed, impossible to forget — and of the hold she has on him. It's sensual but gentle, with a Latin swing.

Donés was inspired by a trip to Cuba, and the song's rhythm has Caribbean warmth. After it was used in a TV advert in Spain it became a massive hit, and it's still one of the best-known Spanish pop songs.

“Flaca” (skinny) is also an affectionate nickname in much of the Spanish-speaking world — couples call each other “flaca” or “flaco” the way English speakers say “babe”. The words are clear and conversational, ideal for A2.
