What the song is about

“Chega de Saudade” (enough longing), by Tom Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes, is often called the first bossa nova song. In João Gilberto's 1958 recording the singer sends his sadness off with a message for the woman he loves: tell her that without her there's no peace, and ask her to come back. When she does, there'll be no end of hugs and kisses — and no more saudade.

Gilberto's quiet, almost spoken voice and his new guitar rhythm changed Brazilian music; Jobim and the singers of a whole generation followed.

“Saudade” is the Portuguese word everyone wants to learn: the ache of missing someone or something. “Chega de…” (enough of…) is a handy phrase too. The singing is soft and close — ideal for careful listening.
