“Evidências” (evidence) is the song all of Brazil knows by heart. The singer keeps telling himself and everyone else that he's stopped loving her — but he denies it so often, and thinks about her so much, that the evidence gives him away. In the chorus he finally admits it.
Written by José Augusto and Paulo Sérgio Valle and recorded in 1990 by the sertanejo duo Chitãozinho & Xororó, it became an anthem of Brazilian bars, weddings and karaoke nights — the song that makes a whole room sing at full voice.
The Portuguese is slow and clear, and the theme gives you the vocabulary of denial and truth: to deny, to lie, to pretend, the truth, the heart. Learn the chorus and you'll have something to sing at any Brazilian party.
