What the song is about

“Désenchantée” (disenchanted) is Mylène Farmer's best-known song, released in 1991. She speaks for a generation that has lost its illusions: everything around her is chaos, ideals have collapsed, and she's searching for someone — a soul — who can still help her believe in something.

The epic video, set in a grim prison-like camp from which young people break out, became famous, and the song was a huge hit in France, Belgium and beyond. It's still a dance-floor anthem.

Farmer's voice is high and clear, and the lines are short. The vocabulary is abstract but common: le chaos, une génération, chercher, perdue. A good B1 song for French pop history.
