“Bella” (2013) tells the story of a woman who answered to the name of Bella. Every man in the area is under her spell — they lose their heads, their money, their friends — and she always moves on. The singer warns himself, but he's falling too.
It was the first big solo hit for Gims, born in Kinshasa and raised in Paris, who had been part of the rap group Sexion d'Assaut. The song mixes rap, pop and a Mediterranean feel, and became a huge success in France.
It's told as a story, in the past tense, which makes it a good B1 song. Listen for the imperfect (“elle répondait” — she used to answer) and the street French of Paris.
