What the song is about

“Chantaje” (blackmail) is a duet about a relationship where nobody plays fair. Maluma accuses Shakira of playing with him — she says yes, then no, she disappears and returns when she likes — and she answers that he knows exactly what he's getting into. It's flirting as a power game, and both enjoy it.

Released in late 2016 as a single from Shakira's album El Dorado, it pairs the two biggest Colombian voices of the time, one from Barranquilla on the Caribbean coast, one from Medellín. The beat is slow reggaeton, which keeps the words easy to follow.

The back-and-forth structure helps learners: you hear the same ideas from both sides, often with “tú” and “yo” swapped. Watch for the vocabulary of games and feelings: to play, to lie, to want, to suffer, and the many ways to say “baby”.
