What the song is about

“Te Felicito” (I congratulate you) is Shakira's 2022 song about discovering that someone was lying all along. She congratulates him — on his acting, on how convincing he was, on how well he hid it — and every compliment is a jab. Rauw Alejandro joins her, and the video, set in a strange robot-like world, plays with the idea of something fake.

It came out as Shakira's separation was in the news, and fans read it as personal. The beat is upbeat pop-reggaeton, which makes the bitter words even sharper.

Sarcasm is a great thing to learn in Spanish: “te felicito” and “qué bien” can mean the opposite of what they say. Listen for the vocabulary of lies — to lie, to pretend, to act — and the tone that turns praise into criticism.
