kkondae

🇰🇷 Korean slang from Seoul

What does “꼰대” mean?

a bossy know-it-all (often older)

Example

“latteneun mariya” haneun sungan kkondaeya.
The moment you say “back in my day”, you're a kkondae.

Good to know

라떼는 말이야 (“latte is a horse”) is a pun on 나 때는 말이야 (“back in my day”). Never call an adult 꼰대 to their face.

Who you can say it to

With friends, not your boss

🙄 Teasing💼 Work

The textbook way to say it: 권위적인 사람

Heard in a conversation

Team dinner on a Friday

Remember last year's dinner? At karaoke the head made the mood go totally awkward.
Haha, I remember. Still, he's not a bossy know-it-all. He's low-key a nice guy.
True. But it's the unwritten rule that the youngest grills the meat... and you're the youngest, Jieun.
