What the song is about

“País Tropical” is Jorge Ben's cheerful portrait of Brazilian life, released in 1969: he lives in a tropical country, blessed and beautiful; it's carnival in February; he has his guitar, his car, and he's a Flamengo fan. It's a list of small joys sung with a grin.

The song became a national favourite, recorded by Wilson Simonal and Gal Costa as well, and it's played whenever Brazil wants to feel good about itself — in stadiums, at carnival, at the World Cup.

At one point Jorge Ben sings words cut in half, as a joke — so don't panic if you miss a syllable! The rest is simple, everyday vocabulary: to live, the country, the carnival, the guitar.
