What the song is about

“O Leãozinho” (the little lion) is one of Caetano Veloso's gentlest songs, from his 1977 album Bicho. He sings to someone he calls his little lion: he likes to see them in the sun, walking on the sand, with their golden mane, and just looking at them cheers up his lonely heart.

Caetano, from Bahia, is one of the giants of Brazilian music and a founder of Tropicália. This song shows his tender side; it's been sung to children and lovers ever since.

The words are simple and affectionate, sung slowly with a guitar. Watch the diminutive “-inho” (leão → leãozinho), Brazil's favourite way to make things small and dear, and the playful invented verb “desentristecer” (to un-sadden).
