What the song is about

In “Infiel” (unfaithful), the singer has found out her partner is cheating. Instead of falling apart, she takes charge: she knows everything, she's leaving, and the other woman is welcome to him — let's see how long he stays faithful to her. It's heartbreak with pride.

Marília Mendonça, from Goiás, became the “queen of sofrência” — sertanejo songs of heartbreak, often from a woman's point of view — and this was one of her first big hits. She died in a plane crash in 2021, aged 26, and Brazil mourned her as few artists before.

Her Portuguese is clear and direct, sung slowly over guitars. The vocabulary of betrayal — to cheat, the lover, to leave, to suffer — is everyday Brazilian Portuguese.
