What the song is about

“Amar pelos Dois” (to love for both of us) was written by Luísa Sobral and sung by her brother Salvador at the 2017 Eurovision Song Contest in Kyiv, where it won with a record score — Portugal's first victory after more than fifty years of trying. In a contest of fireworks and dance routines, it was a quiet, old-fashioned ballad sung almost in a whisper.

The singer asks the person he loves to come back; if their heart has forgotten how to love, his can love for the two of them.

This is European Portuguese, which sounds very different from Brazilian: vowels are swallowed and “s” often sounds like “sh”. Salvador sings slowly and softly, so it's a gentle introduction to the accent of Lisbon.
